Washington Elementary School Visit

Richmond, CA

April 30, 2002

Mrs. Langston's class visited MAAT Science Village to study earthquakes and structural designs to withstand large earthquakes.  The students made shake tables to test the strength of the structures they built.  They learned about African American Civil Engineers like Frederick Jordan who company designed the part of the Cypress Freeway which felt in 1989; Frederick Massiah who was among the first engineers to calculate the yield strength of concrete and develop reinforced concrete, and the architect Paul Williams who help design the Los Angeles Airport is the 1950's and many movie star homes.  They also learned about ancient African builders in Egypt like Khufu and his Khafre who built the pyramids in Giza just out of Cairo, Egypt.

Below are pictures from their visit.
